Celebrate Breastfeeding at ‘Big Latch On’ Aug. 2

July 25th, 2019

Phyllis Young, RN, was born at Grand View Health. She’s worked here for 29 years. And since 1994, she’s helped hundreds of mothers learn proper breastfeeding techniques as a lactation consultant. “It’s harder than most people think,” she says, “but the benefits to mom and baby last a lifetime.”

On Friday, August 2, at 10 a.m., Young and other Grand View Health caregivers will join mothers throughout our region inside Conference Room 1L for the 2019 Global Big Latch On. The worldwide event, held during World Breastfeeding Week, raises awareness for the importance of breastfeeding.

During the event, mothers will gather to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Refreshments will be served. “We’ll also provide breastfeeding supplies and other giveaways for all moms who deliver during World Breastfeeding Week at Grand View Hospital,” Young says.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding protects infants from conditions such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, diarrhea, childhood obesity, and infections of the urinary tract and respiratory tract. “It’s a great way to set up your infant’s digestive system for lifelong success,” Young says.

For moms, breastfeeding may reduce postpartum bleeding, decrease menstrual blood loss, decrease risk for breast or ovarian cancers, and create an earlier return to pre-pregnancy weight.
