Grand View Hospital announced Heather Evers, R.N., C.R.R.N., as the recipient of the 2014 Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award. Evers, who joined Grand View in 1996, is a staff nurse who cares for patients on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. After accepting her award she said, “I couldn’t do what I do every day without my coworkers. This is one of the greatest honors.”
The award was established in memory of Ellis Greenspan by his son, cardiologist Mitchell M. Greenspan, M.D. and other members of the family. It is presented annually to recognize a registered or licensed practical nurse at Grand View who serves as a role model of nursing professionalism and delivers excellence in patient care. Compassion, understanding, and exceptional communication skills are among the nomination criteria. Evers was nominated by coworkers, a physician, and a patient’s family who noted on the nomination form, “Heather is a very caring, compassionate person that is never too busy to help a patient in need. As she was walking past his room, Heather recognized that a serious medical event was happening. Her quick thinking and first aid response was a huge part of saving his life. We cannot express the gratitude we hold for Heather. She truly is considered an angel to us and will forever be in our hearts.”
Other nominees for the 2014 Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award included: Valerie Bradburn, Intensive Coronary Care Unit; Donna Derstine, Birth & Family Center; Marianne Haig, Medical Surgical Oncology Unit; Melissa Kelly, Joint Replacement Center; Melanie Mansley, Hospice; Heather Miller, Joint Replacement Center; Patricia Myers, CHOP Newborn Care; Lori Pagano, Surgical Services; Valarie Polk, CHOP Pediatric Care; Julie Spratt, Emergency Medicine; Anthony Thornhill, Surgical Services; and Phyllis Young, Birth & Family Center. Evers and the other nominees were recognized at a special ceremony held on May 7 attended by Dr. Greenspan and his mother, physicians and staff, and other members of the Grand View community. Patients and their families as well as Grand View staff and physicians make nominations for the Greenspan award each spring.
