Grand View Hospital Updates Operating Room with New Technology
New, Computer-Assisted System Meets Growing Patient Needs

(Published December 8, 2006) Sellersville — Grand View Hospital now offers minimally-invasive, computer-assisted technology that enables surgeons to more accurately align implants during knee replacement procedures.

The technology provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the knee joint and precise data, allowing surgeons to virtually map out the entire surgery. Using its integrated components – software, hardware and instruments – surgeons can view each step of the surgical procedure in real-time, three-dimensional images that mirror the individual patient’s anatomy. The Ci System is produced by DePuy, a Johnson & Johnson company.

“We’re always looking for ways to bring innovative technologies to our patients – and frankly, they’re asking for technologies like the Ci System,” said orthopaedic surgeon Paul Weidner, MD, medical director of the Grand View’s Joint Replacement Center. “It’s no surprise that more and more people are in need of total knee replacement surgeries, given the aging population in the country. In fact, about 400 joint replacement surgeries are performed at Grand View each year and this has been steadily increasing. By implementing this system we believe we’re best equipped to meet the growing need.”

Since Grand View began using computer-assisted joint surgery, several patients have benefited from the new technology. The Ci System was also selected because of the manufacturer’s training policy. DePuy requires that surgeons attend their extensive training program before ever operating with the technology.

“We want the number of local residents impacted by this technology to continue to multiply,” said surgeon James Bumgardner, MD, who also uses the Ci System. “Our goal is to implement the most innovative technologies available to provide advanced care and services to our patients. Our hospital is committed to continuing a strong alliance with technology partners that benefit people in our community.”
