Grand View Hospital to Become Tobacco-Free in February

(Published November 16, 2006) West Rockhill Township — Grand View Hospital and its campus will become entirely Tobacco-Free, effective February, 14, 2007, in keeping with its mission to support a healthy community.

“As a provider of care to patients coping with the negative health effects of smoking and second hand smoke, we feel strongly that we should discourage tobacco use in any form,” said Stuart H. Fine, CEO. “It is well known that smoking greatly increases one’s risk of illness, particularly cancer and heart and pulmonary diseases. In addition to harm caused directly to the person who smokes, second hand smoke is a serious public health concern. Non-smokers, including many of our patients, are intolerant of tobacco exposure.

The Hospital’s Tobacco-Free status will apply to everyone, Trustees, employees, physicians, volunteers, patients, Auxilians, vendors, visitors and others. Smoking and the use of tobacco products will be prohibited on all Grand View Hospital properties, including the Hospital outpatient centers and the offices of Grand View Medical Practices. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use will not be permitted in any building on any campus or on any outside areas, including parking lots.

“As a healthcare provider, we understand that nicotine is powerfully addictive,” said Lisa Walkiewicz, manager of Health Promotion and Wellness. “Grand View will therefore be providing support for individuals who are attempting to quit smoking, such as smoking cessation classes.”
