2006 Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award Nominees

The Greenspan family and friends established the Ellis Greenspan Memorial Award in memory of the father of Dr. Mitchell M. Greenspan to recognize a nurse who exemplifies excellence in the provision of patient care. The recipient will symbolize the “Heart of Nursing,” consistently demonstrating compassion, care and understanding of the patient and his/her family during the course of the illness. The award recipients demonstrate a true dedication to the nursing profession and promote the image of the professional nurse.

This year we had 22 nominees from 16 different departments. It is an honor to be nominated for this award and we would like to congratulate all the nominees and thank those who took the time to let our nurses know how they symbolize the “Heart of Nursing.”

“My brother was small, kind, gentle man. His needs and wants were simple. She made him feel that he was not a simple man but a very special person to her. She would always bring a smile to his face.”

“I lived at Grand View with my hubby on hospice care. She would come in and whisper, whisper so sweetly. She would try not to wake me and also tried to comfort me at the same time.”

“She exemplifies compassion and caring to her patients, and also is a professional role model to her peers and coworkers.”

“In the emergency department we see thousands of patients a year and for this reason the doctors totally depend on the nurses to access the patients, administer the medications, interact with the families, and either discharge or admit the patient. In these critical matters she is absolutely reliable and accountable. In my 24 years of emergency room experience, I have never worked with a nurse with better clinical instincts and judgment.”

“As nursing supervisor, she is responsible for the whole hospital. She ensures quality, safe patient care by staffing each unit adequately and by being a hands-on support person.”

“Totally confident manner. Never rattled! When my husband was starting to get confused on night she came in calm, talked to him sweetly full of respect and calmed him down.”

“This nurse loves her job and shows it by being a caring, loving, compassionate and beautiful person. She is a leader and role model. She is my role model!”

“She is a very compassionate, caring, loving person and lets you know that she is walking with you on this road of uncharted paths.”

“She seems to be able to sense, from each patient, what is most important to them, and then she delivers it. Sometimes it’s a hug, sometimes it’s a joke, and sometimes it’s a prayer. She reminds us all that patients aren’t just a diagnosis, they are individuals. She is a type of nurse that allows GVH to maintain its reputation in the community as the place to go for outstanding nursing care.”

“She walked us through each stage of labor. She had a calm and honest way about her. Her tone of voice and confidence soothed our nerves.”

“We asked her to always be totally honest with us, and she was. She explained everything that was going on, why she was doing it, and she hardly left mom’s side. When mom died, she was there again with condolences, hugs and tears.”

“Although MOU is always busy and Oncology Doctors’ schedules are ever changing, she always makes me feel that I’m the most important patient there. She is extremely adaptable and flexible with her time, not only with me, but with the doctors, other nurses, staff and patients within the department.”

“If you were to look up angel in the dictionary you would find that she definitely fits that description.”

“If any of my family members were patients, I would want her to be their nurse. Her empathetic and caring attitude is evident in every patient she sees.”

“She goes above and beyond to keep her patients and families well informed of the plan of care and to keep them happy. She truly cares about her patients and spends extra time if they need her.”

“Our brother knew that he was loved by all, including his hospice nurse. She treated him as if he was her brother, and anything we asked for, if it was in her power, it was done.”

“When communicating with patients and their family members, she puts them at ease with her professional, respectful manner, giving clear, concise information.”

“We were always happy to hear she was our nurse!”

“She is extremely courteous to her co-workers and cares about the unit as a whole. She is very pleasant to work with and shares her knowledge from unit to unit.”

“Her article of a ‘Lesson Learned’ was published in a regional nursing magazine ‘Advance for Nurses’.”

“She provides outstanding care and comfort for her patients.”

“She is a compassionate nurse and goes beyond what is expected in her role as an RN to be a patient advocate. She will go the extra mile to ensure patient safety.”

“As a certified critical care nurse, all nurses can rely on her expertise when a difficult medical situation presents itself.”

“She displays exceptional communication skills with all she comes in contact with. She will often take the time to stop by and talk with patients and families that she knows are going through a particularly hard time.”

“When her patients are in the recovery room she talks to them calmly and with compassion. I’m sure her voice makes the patient feel calm, relaxed and cared about.”

“She is very well liked by patients and patient families and colleagues. She keeps her patients and families very well informed and shows her knowledge and caring by sitting with them and discussing everything until patients and families have been fully informed.”

“For several years we have watched her go that extra step to comfort, educate and ensure a happy recovery for her patients.”

“She displays great empathy and a very caring attitude with her patients and their significant others. If you observe her working, you can tell that she loves her job. She truly cares about her patients.”

“She cares for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of her patients. Her positive attitude and gentle but persistent encouragement have been known to turn despair into optimism.

“She organizes the training for Unit Assistants and Unit Secretaries. This is so important because she teaches us how to interact with the patients and staff. She is positive, enthusiastic and professional and encourages us to do our best. I am a better aide and secretary (and someday, nurse) because of what I learned from her.”

“She truly exemplifies excellence in nursing. An excellent nurse not only cares for her patient, but extends that care to the family. She gave our mom excellent care and she cared for us too.”

“I can always rely on her to make sure my Chemotherapy runs smoothly.”

“She is very strong in resolving difficult medical or ethical issues.”

“She is definitely a terrific role model! If I could go back and re-educate myself, I would train to be a nurse. Besides her great bedside manner, she does so much more. She is a great promoter of GVH and her strength and expertise always reflect excellence. She has a way of making every patient feel special and her attitude is always upbeat and positive.”

“Observing her bedside manner, I noticed that she introduces herself and allows the patient to voice his or her immediate needs. She listens first then proceeds to give clear answers and explanations.”

“I have seen her go out of her way to help patient’s families when under stress. She stays later than her shift and never complains.”

“She went to his home and faced lots of family there. She said hello to everyone, greeted the dogs warmly, but focused on him and his needs. She listened to his concerns and tried to calm his worries. She handles everything in a very professional manner.”

“She arrived at 8 pm and stayed until after midnight. She was faced with so many challenges and she handled them all very competently, being an advocate for the family.”
