When to Use 911
Dial 911 to report a fire, a crime, a medical emergency or any other situation that requires immediate response from a fire truck, police car or an ambulance.
When Placing a 911 Call
Dial 911. They will answer by saying 911 emergency.
Remain calm. Speak clearly and answer the dispatcher's questions to the best of your knowledge. They will need to know the nature of the problem and the location where the problem is occurring, plus your name and number. Remember, you are the eyes and ears for the dispatcher and the responding agency. Stay on the line if you are not in danger. Advise the dispatcher if you are in danger.
When Waiting for Help to Arrive
Follow directions from the dispatcher. If it is dark, turn on an outside light and flash a light when you hear the approaching siren. Meet the responding agency and direct them to where help is needed. If you have pets, lock them in another room if possible. On an ambulance call, make sure furniture is moved if it is will be in the way of a stretcher. Above all, REMAIN CALM.
