Fenstermacher Golf Tournament Supports Hospice in a Big Way
John W. Fenstermacher, Sr., passed away on December 13, 1994, following a valiant battle with lung cancer that had been diagnosed 13 months earlier. He was just 65 years old. Nothing in his life had ever held him back, not even the loss of a leg at the tender age of eight. He went on to be a standout pitcher at North Penn High School and president of his senior class. He was a successful businessman, having owned and operated W.H. Fenstermacher, a heating and air conditioning contractor in Lansdale started by his father. “Senior,” as many of his friends called him, was by all accounts a gentleman and an inspiration to family and friends. Most of all, he was a loving husband to Peggy and devoted father to Mary Lee, Beth, Cathy and John “Junior.”

For ten years before getting sick, Senior had rekindled his love of golf, something he inherited from his father. Junior had the “bug,” too, so it was no surprise to anyone who knew them that Junior and Senior had found great camaraderie on the golf course at Indian Valley Country Club. It became a focal point for both of them, but especially for Senior, who after joining the club in 1986, quickly made friends and got involved in ways that could improve the club for everyone. “Senior was the ultimate gentleman and a good human being. It was truly an honor to know him,” said Ron Amey, who golfed with him regularly.

To honor and ultimately memorialize his father, John Junior organized a golf tournament. He wanted the proceeds from the outing to benefit Grand View Hospital cancer patients like his father. Junior and his mom, Peggy, decided to make the Grand View Hospital Hospice program the beneficiary of the John W. Fenstermacher Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament. Grand View Hospice provides medical care, pain management and emotional and spiritual support to individuals with terminal illnesses and their families.

“In 1995, as I handed over that first check for $1,500, I would never have guessed that we would be here today giving $23,100, or that we would have contributed more than $168,000 to Grand View Hospice over the last 12 years,” John Junior said recently. Last year, John was selected by the Pennsylvania Hospice Network to receive the Community Support Award. Cathy Haberle, Manager of Grand View Hospice, nominated John in recognition of his exceptional fundraising for hospice care.

John is quick to point out that this award should go to his entire family. From his wife, Fran, to his 88-year-old grandmother, who helps at registration and by selling raffle tickets, the tournament is truly a family affair. Their trademark is the Fenstermacher chocolate chip cookie!

John’s mom and sisters baked 800 cookies for this year’s tournament, held on July 23 at Indian Valley Country Club. “People are unhappy if they don’t get their cookies,” John said. But John saves his biggest thanks for the sponsors and golfers who support the tournament and make it possible for the family to contribute so generously to Grand View.
