Letter from the Chairmen

Dear Friends,

Being a trustee of a not-for-profit hospital is like walking a tight rope. Maintaining balance is the difference between reaching your destination and a rapid descent. As stewards of a large charitable organization, we must balance our mission to provide comprehensive health care to the community with our role as the largest employer in Upper Bucks County. We must consider the needs of various groups: patients, employees, physicians, community members, visitors, donors, vendors, insurers and government regulators. It is a challenging task, especially considering the often opposing interests.

Like the tight-rope walker, we cannot afford a mis-step, especially for major investments like construction and renovation programs. Our Master Facilities Plan, a three-phase project to upgrade our buildings, began with the Outpatient Center at Harleysville, opened two years ago. In the past year, we have continued to develop the center, adding nuclear medicine services, more physician specialists, a Heart Care Center and, most recently, a gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center. The second phase of the plan consists of the relocation of ambulatory services from the hospital campus to the Outpatient Center at Sellersville, presently under construction. The final phase involves the addition and renovation of patient areas within the hospital.

Fortunately, our hospital leadership combines the knowledge of patients, physicians, caregivers, health-care administrators and business people, each of whom brings to the table a lifetime of experience. We carefully consider the needs and desires of our various groups while focusing on our primary mission. For instance, although other services might generate more revenue, we continue to have the only pediatrics unit in the region.

We staff and house Healthy Beginnings Plus, a program that provides mothers and their unborn babies with essential health care they could not otherwise afford. Grand View’s Medical Access Program helps patients to obtain services to address acute illnesses or injuries, while assisting in arranging access to services in the long term.

We are certainly concerned with the bottom line of the financial statement. Without a positive margin, we could not continue to offer the many health-care services that our community deserves. Our real bottom line, however, is always your health.
