Charles L. Winn, M.D., Memorial Dedicated at Grand View

For many people at Grand View Hospital, Charles L. Winn, M.D., was a friend and a role model. A fixture at Grand View through five decades, Dr. Winn served the hospital as a leader of the medical staff, as a hospital historian, and as an exemplar of the values and innovation which have guided the hospital since its founding. A natural leader and surgical innovator, Dr. Winn was Chairman of the Department of Surgery for ten years and served as the hospital’s first Medical Director. While active on the medical staff, he performed the first open heart surgery at Grand View. During his retirement, Dr. Winn authored an updated version of “A History of Grand View Hospital,” an invaluable resource for anyone interested either in Grand View or in the development of community hospital care throughout the 20th century.

In recognition of his contributions and as an enduring salute, a permanent memorial display has been established at Grand View. The display, containing much of the Grand View historical memorabilia which the late Dr. Winn treasured, is located on the second floor of the hospital near the operating suites where his skill and expertise benefited so many lives.
