Oncology Care Strengthened through Fox Chase Partnership

In 2003, the reputation of Grand View Hospital as one of the leading oncology centers in the region was reinforced through an affiliation of the hospital’s comprehensive oncology care programs with Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, nationally recognized as a leading facility for cancer treatment and research. Through the affiliation, Grand View became a member of the Fox Chase Network, a group of community hospitals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware working cooperatively with Fox Chase Cancer Center to provide the latest in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment to communities outside of major urban areas.

After one year, the benefits of the affiliation have become clear, including improved access to clinical trials of new cancer medications and cutting-edge cancer treatments. In addition, Grand View physicians and surgeons have gained access to a national network of clinical studies to enhance their expertise and provide additional treatment options for patients.

The affiliation with Fox Chase is one in a series of relationships which Grand View’s administration has forged with established centers for medical research and innovative care. For instance, Grand View’s well-established commitment to pediatric care was further strengthened in 1996 through the CHOP Connection, a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for the provision of on-site, 24-hour staffing by board-certified pediatricians at Grand View.

“Our scope of quality care and services is enhanced to an even greater degree through our partnership with the leading specialty care facilities in the nation,” said Alan Kaufman, M.D, Co-Medical Director, Grand View Hospital Cancer Center. “For example, our partnership with Fox Chase has resulted in increased access to advanced treatment options and some of the most promising clinical drug trials available today.”

Grand View patients now have access to more than 100 clinical trials, Dr. Kaufman added. Clinical trials, also known as research protocols, are state-of-the-art studies using drugs, radiation, surgery or other therapies. Clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute are available only through certain approved research centers like Fox Chase and their Network affiliates, such as Grand View.

Through the affiliation with Fox Chase, Grand View also has access to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 19 of the nation’s leading cancer centers collaborating to develop and institute standards, treatment guidelines and systems assuring high-quality, cost-effective cancer care.

“The ability to review and participate in these national studies before they become common knowledge in the medical community is a tremendous benefit to our patients,” said Martin Hightower, M.D., Grand View Hospital Radiation Oncology Department Chairman. “We can obtain knowledge of a new imaging technique or radiation treatment and apply the added expertise to current patient care when appropriate.”
