Grand View Hospital Begins Major Facilities Expansion

Enhanced Technology, Increased Patient Comfort Are Keys to Master Facilities Plan

Grand View has been a leader in providing ambulatory care, also known as outpatient care, in the region beginning with the establishment of outpatient facilities in Pennsburg, Sellersville, and now Harleysville.

Grand View Hospital is undertaking a multi-year, $53 million Master Facilities Plan to enhance current and future healthcare delivery in communities served by the hospital and its freestanding facilities.

“The Master Facilities Plan represents the most extensive and innovative expansion ever formulated at Grand View,” said Mark Horne, Grand View Hospital Clinical and Support Services Senior Vice President. “The plan will expand the area served by Grand View, complement and strengthen the hospital’s existing services, increase access to sophisticated diagnosis and treatment options for local residents, and leave Grand View well-positioned for additional expansion as future needs warrant.”

The rationale behind the plan, Horne explained, is threefold:

  1. To increase the hospital’s capacity to accommodate the latest advances in medical technology both at the central campus and at freestanding facilities.

  2. To reflect best practices in modern healthcare delivery by providing comfortable and easily accessible outpatient health care.

  3. To expand in a fiscally responsible manner consistent with Grand View’s commitment to providing care for the entire community while remaining a stable health resource.

The Master Facilities Plan consists of three major phases. The first, Grand View Hospital’s Outpatient Center at Harleysville, opened on August 16. (For details on services and treatment modalities now available in Harleysville, see page 6.) Located ten miles from Grand View’s main campus, the $8 million outpatient center is the first major medical facility to open in the Harleysville area. It combines highly advanced diagnosis and treatment modalities with a comfortable, convenient, and patient-friendly environment.

Phase two of the Master Facilities Plan, scheduled to unfold over the next 18 months, involves development of an even more expansive outpatient care center on the former Stump Farm north of Grand View’s main campus, at the intersection of Route 309 and Lawn Ave. The opening of such a facility near the main hospital reflects the decades-long trend toward provision of even complex medical procedures on an outpatient, same-day basis.

Availability of diagnostic and treatment options at the new outpatient centers will free space at Grand View’s main campus for the third phase of the Master Facilities Plan. The expansion and renovation of major hospital departments, the construction of new floors in existing structures to accommodate additional inpatient units, a significant renovation of the emergency department, reconstruction and expansion of the maternity unit, and a renovated post-surgical care area are among the areas to be addressed through this phase of the Plan.

Approval of the Master Facilities Plan will bring to fruition a three-year process of planning and research, which encompassed a thorough assessment of existing hospital facilities and services, analysis of the region’s changing demographics and prospective health needs, and consultation with clinical care providers, managers, and community members.
