Annual Report 2003
Years of Experience
Letter From the Chairmen
Dear Friends,
This year marks the 90th Anniversary of the founding of Grand View Hospital. At such a time, its appropriate for us to reflect both upon the history of the Hospital and upon the contributions made by Grand View to the health and well being of our friends and neighbors. Therefore, this annual report focuses in part on the people and events that have made Grand View both an important provider of health care and a unique institution, treasured by the community.
Our 90th Anniversary also gives us an opportunity to restate our resolve to carry forward our overarching mission of providing,
quality, cost-effective health care and related services for the Upper Bucks and Northeastern Montgomery County communities which we serve.
The first decade of the 21st Century may well be remembered as one of the most tumultuous times ever endured by the hospital industry. According to the American Hospital Association, one in three hospitals in this country reported negative net margins for fiscal year 2002. A comprehensive overview of the nations healthcare system by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has detailed the ongoing stresses faced by many hospitals, including the downgrading of credit ratings for not-for-profit hospitals that restricts access to needed capital for investments in facilities, technology, and information systems. Meanwhile, expenses for professional medical liability insurance, human resources, and technology continue to escalate. It is also a fact that Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance have not kept pace with the rising cost of providing care, placing added pressure on health-care organizations.
Despite these formidable and ongoing challenges, Grand View Hospital has completed the 2002-03 fiscal year with a positive net margin. The Hospital remains financially stable, and well-positioned to meet the needs of a growing community. This is due in great part to the diligence of our Hospital and Medical Staffs and the commitment of the members of the Grand View Health Foundation and Grand View Hospital Boards of Trustees. Both Boards are comprised of local residents who volunteer countless hours of their time and expertise to ensure that high quality, comprehensive healthcare services are readily available in our local community.
Grand Views Boards and Management have aggressively and creatively pursued fiscal and competitive strategies to assure that Grand View Hospital endures as a community resource. A new 37,000-square-foot outpatient center to be opened in Lower Salford/ Harleysville next spring is indicative of our plans for the future.
Ninety years ago, the founders of Grand View Hospital recognized the need for an institution that would provide local access to vital healthcare services. Today, as we plan new developments and renovations both on the Hospital campus and at community-based outpatient centers, and ongoing acquisitions of new technology, we walk in our founders footsteps as we endeavor to assure that Grand View will continue to be an indispensable provider of health care for residents of our area.
