Grand View: A Great Place to Work
Fast paced; challenging; rewarding: These are just some of the terms Grand View Hospital employees use to describe the environment at the Hospital. Others are: friendly; supportive; and a great place to build a career. "Grand View's Management realizes that our employees make a tremendous commitment to providing the best patient care," says Debbie Shanta, Human Resources Manager. In turn, the Hospital offers an extremely competitive and comprehensive salary and benefit package along with many other additional "perks" that employees find valuable. Some healthcare professionals believe that they must seek employment at a large city or university-based medical center in order to find attractive benefits and compensation. Grand View employees, in contrast, have found that our modern and progressive community hospital affords the opportunity to work in a professionally challenging environment while receiving excellent compensation and benefits without the hassles of commuting to the city and payment of city wage taxes. In addition, Shanta points out that, due to the diversity of services offered by Grand View, a wide range of opportunity exists to build a healthcare career. Here is a look at how four Grand View employees, whose time with the Hospital ranges from a few months to several decades, are making the most of the opportunities and benefits they've discovered at Grand View. Professional Challenges
As an echocardiography technologist and new employee, Anita Fontana finds Grand View a collegial and professionally fulfilling place to work. Fontana's previous employment had been at larger hospitals in Philadelphia, so she was pleased to find that Grand View offered professionally challenging work in her field as well as attractive compensation and fringe benefits, in a community where she prefers to live." I was pleased to find that Grand View Hospital is so progressive, has the latest technology, and is up-to-date," Fontana says. In addition, she's been impressed by the respect and collegiality exhibited by physicians, technologists, and other co-workers. Flexible Benefits and Flexible Schedules
As a working mother, the benefits available at Grand View to meet the particular needs of her family mean a great deal to Janice Hunsberger, RN, Case Management Department. Hunsberger found Grand View's on-site day care center to be a great help when her children were younger. She also appreciates the range of choices in medical and dental insurance coverage from which she can select to meet her family's changing needs. What has meant the most to Janice is Grand View's sensitivity to her scheduling needs. "The Hospital is very supportive of employees' needs," Hunsberger recounts. "Several years ago, I needed to change from full-time to part-time employment for a short period, and both Human Resources and Nursing management were able to work with me to accommodate my schedule so I could continue to work at the Hospital." Many departments at Grand View offer flexible scheduling to allow employees to plan their workday around school, personal, or family needs. While the availability of flexible scheduling and part-time work depends on Hospital and department needs, Grand View maintains a strong commitment to helping employees balance work and family life. The day-care program at Grand View is available to all employees with children. The program features "drop in" services for staff members called in to work on short notice and also offers sick child care in conjunction with Grand View's Pediatrics Department. Tuition Assistance
It seems safe to say that Mary Poust-Warnas, RN, likes school; or at least, to state that she appreciates the career opportunities that were made possible by education. Poust-Warnas worked at Grand View as a licensed practical nurse from 1975 to 1990. For more than ten years of that period, with help from Grand View's Tuition Assistance Program, she successfully completed college courses to become a registered nurse. Not yet finished with her education, she now pursues a bachelor's degree in nursing at a local university. Without the tuition reimbursement provided by Grand View, or the schedule flexibility and encouragement provided by the Nursing and Human Resources Departments, Poust-Warnas doubts she would have been able to pursue her dream. "As a single mother, I would not have had the time or resources to do so," she says. "Grand View makes it easier for people to pursue an education." The Hospital encourages employees to grow personally by continuing their education. Courses need not be directly related to workplace assignments, says Shanta. "For instance, a clinical staff member may want to study marketing or accounting, to prepare for a future managerial position. The Hospital supports that." Career Development
Claudia Garner, RN, left Grand View Hospital's employ several years ago, but she did not stay away for long. After 13 years as a nurse in Grand View's patient care units and emergency room, Garner left to follow her interest in Industrial Medicine with a local employer. When the opportunity arose, she was eager to return and build her career at Grand View. Coming back to the Hospital, Garner says, "Was a little like coming back home." Grand View has a strong policy of encouraging employee development, including promoting from within whenever possible. Due to the hospital's wide range of services and job categories, Grand View can often offer opportunities for career growth that may not be available from private employers. As Garner states, "You can aspire to anything at Grand View."
