Cancer Survivors Invited to Celebration Hosted by Grand View

September 2, 2010 Sellersville, PA – Grand View Hospital invites cancer survivors to its 23rd Cancer Survivors Celebration to be held on Saturday, September 25, from 8:30 am to noon in Heritage Hall at Calvary Church in Souderton.

Speakers include Martin Hightower, MD, Chairman of Radiation Oncology and Eva Grayzel, an interactive performance artist and motivational speaker. Grayzel will share her personal journey and triumph over oral cancer. Grand View palliative care specialist, Chris Hansen, CRNP, will speak on the topics of communication, decision-making, and coping.

What began as a small gathering on the lawn of Grand View Hospital in 1985, has since grown to a popular event, which last drew more than 250 people. This event is a celebration of life and hope that draws together survivors. "A diagnosis of cancer is often a life-changing event. Only people who have experienced this diagnosis and the treatment for it fully understand the physical and emotional impact on their loved ones and themselves,” says Dorothy Barwis, Radiation Oncology Manager, who has helped coordinate the event for the past 22 years. This is also an opportunity for cancer survivors to see some of their health care providers. “Our compassionate staff looks forward to this event and a chance to hear about people they’ve helped, especially their number of cancer-free years,” Barwis says. Departments throughout the hospital are donating a “basket of hope” as a door prize.

Grand View welcomes cancer survivors to bring a guest and gather with fellow survivors for an inspirational event complete with breakfast, motivational presentations, and an opportunity to share their personal journeys with other survivors. Although the event is free of charge, registration is required. To register, or for more information, call the Grand View Information Line at 215-453-4300, or visit www.gvh.org.
