Grand View Hospital Presents Ninth Annual David M. Flowers, MD Award for Excellence in Cardiology
(February 24, 2012) Sellersville, PA – Over 80 friends, family, and colleagues gathered for Grand View Hospital’s ninth annual presentation of the David M. Flowers, MD Award for Excellence in Cardiology. Keynote speaker Raymond Singer, MD, chief, division of cardiothoracic surgery of Lehigh Valley Health Network presented on the latest advances in heart valve replacement.

The recipient of this year’s David M. Flowers Award is Dave Bergey, RN, a 23-year Grand View employee who has worked in cardiac rehabilitation for the last 20 years. The award is dedicated in memory of respected Grand View cardiologist David M. Flowers, who succumbed to cancer 10 years ago at age 48. It is intended to inspire Grand View caregivers who share the commitment to excellence and dedication to patient care and community service that Dr. Flowers embodied.

Dave Bergey was selected for his strong clinical nursing skills and exceptional service as an educator, patient advocate, and nurse in Grand View’s cardiac rehabilitation program, according to Laurel Landis, RN, cardiology department manager. “He displays caring, compassion, and competence,” throughout his involvement in all phases of cardiac rehabilitation and fitness. He initially meets with cardiac patients when they are hospitalized, then again on an outpatient basis, and finally in Lifestyle Fitness for program maintenance. In accepting the award Bergey said, “I like to use humor and hope. I try to build my patient’s confidence while educating them about lifestyle changes that can improve their heart health.”

Landis, who worked with Dr. Flowers and received the first Flowers award in 2004, said, “This award is about excellence, compassion, and moving the world of cardiology forward. He always challenged us to consider new solutions.” Some of the newest and developing approaches for open-heart procedures and minimally invasive techniques to repair heart valves were presented in Dr. Singer’s presentation, The Past, Present, and Future of Heart Valve Surgery.

“David would be very excited about the new treatment options available today,” said Paul Hermany, MD, a close friend and colleague who worked with Dr. Flowers at Buxmont Cardiology Associates in Sellersville. “David was not only a cardiologist, but also a scientist ?a real thinker,” reflected Dr. Hermany on the life and contributions of Dr. Flowers.

Grand View President and CEO Stuart Fine thanked Deborah Bolanowski, MD, widow of Dr. Flowers and the rest of the family for its support. “Without their support, we would not have the David M. Flowers, MD Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.” It provides early intervention for coronary heart disease and vascular disease. Available procedures include cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, and stenting.

The David M. Flowers, MD Award for Excellence in Cardiology was established in 2003. Names of recipients are inscribed on a plaque on permanent display at the hospital. Endowed through support of the hospital, as well as the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Flowers, the award includes a significant cash prize. Dr. Bolanowski commented that her late husband was very dedicated to his family and would have liked recipients to use the cash award for something enjoyable and fulfilling to do with family and loved ones.
