(September 20, 2011) Sellersville, PA - Pennridge High School student council members have planned a week of activities to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds to treat the disease at Grand View Hospital through a "Pink Out 2011" event being held in the Pennridge School District.  The event culminates this Friday, September 30 when pink, the color most associated with breast cancer awareness, will replace some of the traditional green and white school colors during the high school football game beginning at 7 pm against Souderton at Poppy Yoder field.

Pennridge junior Sarah Seiler is orchestrating the event for the second time, and like last year, hopes to see a stadium full of pink.  She and other members of student council are selling T-shirts to raise funds.  During Friday's game the Pennridge football team will wear pink socks and cheerleaders and band members will wear pink bows. In the stands, students from the three middle schools will be given pink ribbons and even spectators will receive pink ribbons at the gate.

"The event is even bigger than last year," says Sarah. She was inspired to hold a "Pink Out" student council community service project last year after recognizing that breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer in American women, affects a great number of people within the community.  Events like this help raise awareness of the importance of having regular mammograms as the best way to detect breast cancer early and increase survival.

In addition to raising funds through the sale of pink T-shirts, Sarah and other student council members are accepting donations from local businesses and organizations. Additionally, donation jars are being placed at Pennridge High School and at the stadium for Friday's football game. Donations may be made in cash or check payable to Grand View Health Foundation with a notation "Pink Out 2011."
