Grand View Hospital Officially Opens New Birthing Unit
(March 9, 2010) Sellersville, PA – Grand View Hospital today opened its new Labor, Delivery, and Recovery Unit, the second of a three-phase, $7 million maternity renovation project.

“Grand View Hospital remains committed to providing our community with outstanding maternity care,” said Kathy Burkey, vice president of patient services. “While some hospitals have decided to close their maternity units, we continue to invest in expanding our Birth and Family Center so we can meet the needs of mothers and babies. We care for community residents throughout their entire lives and want to ensure they get the best start possible.”

The new unit features five new Labor, Delivery, and Recovery rooms. Each room has custom hardwood floors and is furnished with a bed, bassinet, loveseat, and flat-screen TV. The stylish tile-lined bathrooms are each equipped with a six-head European spa shower for the patient’s comfort.

“The unit is a perfect blend of a five-star hotel and cutting edge medical facility,” said Michael J. Chmielewski, MD, chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “It is absolutely the most beautiful unit in which I have ever worked.” The unit also includes a new nurse’s station, pre-natal assessment and observation rooms, lactation room, staff locker rooms, and a conference room. The final stage of the renovation, expected to be completed in early summer, will include a

second Cesarean (C-section) birth operating room and r ecovery area, a consultation room, a family visitation room, and a lounge where the newborns’ parents may stay overnight.

The first phase of construction was the renovation of the 28-bed Maternity Post-Partum Unit, which opened in August. In addition to attractive private and semi-private rooms, the unit offers a cozy family waiting area and a beautifully expanded nursery. The unit also features a six-bed special care nursery for critically ill infants. The nursery is just one example of how Grand View is increasing its capacity to meet the needs of women with high risk pregnancies and their babies. Since this fall, perinatologists have provided consultation services two days a week at Grand View. Also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, perinatologists offer outpatient appointments at the hospital and provide consulting services to inpatients and their physicians.

All Grand View maternity and pediatric units are staffed by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia pediatricians 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At Grand View, CHOP physicians are available to assist with difficult births and care for newborns needing special care. In addition, Grand View has trained nurses with specialty certification in inpatient obstetrics, maternal-child nursing, fetal monitoring, and third-trimester ultrasounds, as well as neonatal advanced life support.

The renovation project was funded in part by the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary through a leadership gift of $1 million dollars to the Expanding The Vision campaign. Tours of the unit may be scheduled by calling Grand View’s Central Scheduling Department at 215-453-4100.

The Birth and Family Center at Grand View Hospital offers a wide range of special services, classes and programs, and amenities based around pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care.
