Lymphedema Therapy Program at Grand View Hospital

Highly Successful Lymphedema Treatment
Part of Grand View's Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department, the certified lymphedema therapists at Grand View Hospital help reduce the abnormal swelling associated with lymphedema, investigate and describe potential lymphedema complications and teach lymphedema self-management techniques.  Our lymphedema therapists are trained in Manual Lymph Drainage/Complete Decongestive Therapy (MLD/CDT), a highly successful technique used to treat and control lymphedema.

Our Two-Phased Approach
Within Grand View Hospital's Lymphedema Therapy Program, we use massage, compression bandaging, exercise and education to help you manage the symptoms of lymphedema.

Phase I:   A certified lymphedema therapist will generally work with you for three to six weeks (depending on the severity of your lymphedema).  Phase I focuses on  fluid reduction and includes:

  • Skin and nail care
  • Manual lymph drainage (massage)
  • Compression bandaging
  • Home exercise program

Throughout Phase I, you will be instructed on how to manage lymphedema on your own and with the help of family or friends.  By the end of Phase I, you will be fitted with a compression garment to help maintain the reduction in swelling.

Phase II:   Designed to help you maintain the benefits achieved in Phase I, Phase II consists of:

  • Compression garment worn during the day
  • Compression bandaging at night
  • Continuation of your home exercise program
  • Skin and nail care
  • Self-massage
