Concerned about the environment? Maybe you haven’t given it much thought, but the fact is that exclusive breastfeeding is one of the best ways for new moms to Go Green. Most people don't consider breastfeeding when they are looking at ways to protect the environment, but exclusive breastfeeding ranks right up there with recycling when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint. In addition to all of the other benefits that come with breastfeeding your baby, when you choose to breastfeed you are choosing to protect and preserve the environment.
Manufacturing and distributing formula, bottles, and other bottle-feeding supplies contributes to pollution. Breastfeeding eliminates or greatly reduces the need for all of these items. In addition, bottle-feeding supplies can remain in landfills for hundreds of years.
With breastfeeding, clean-up is minimal so little water and/or detergent is needed for cleaning.
Breastfeeding is also a very cost effective way to feed a baby. Purchasing formula and all of the supplies needed to feed it to a baby is costly, at least $1,000 for the first year of a child’s life.
By choosing to breastfeed, you are not only promoting good health for your baby, but care for preserving your environment.
