A cancer diagnosis is a defining moment - whether the physician is speaking to you or someone you love - in that instant your life has changed. At that moment or sometime soon after, you may realize that you know little about the disease and how it will affect you now, and in the future. You may want to look for help, but be unsure about where you may be able to find the information you need.
The Grand View Hospital Regional Cancer Program developed the Patient Resource Notebook for patients newly diagnosed with cancer. Entitled "Guiding You on Your Path", the notebook provides information you need to understand:
- The disease
- Treatment options
- Resources available to help
Through our experience with working with patients, we understand that the amount of information available can be so overwhelming that you don't know where to begin. As a result, we asked our patients what information is most useful to patients who have recently received a cancer diagnosis. We've incorporated their suggestions by adding:
- A glossary of terms
- A list of community resources
- Recommended websites
- Questions to ask your doctor
In addition, the notebook contains tools to help you stay organized. These include:
- Appointment and medical logs
- Business cards holders
- Note and journaling pages
We have presented the material in a format that is easy to understand and use. We hope that this notebook helps to relieve some of your stress during this challenging time.
